As recorded in Matthew 4:4, Jesus said, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” He had reached the end of 40 days of fasting. The need to eat would have been extreme. Satan was tempting Jesus to turn stones into bread. Jesus was certainly capable of doing so. However, it would have been cheating. Jesus was here to rescue mankind and in order to do that He had to live as one of us, but remaining perfect. Cheating would have defeated His mission. So, Jesus emphasized the importance of doing things God’s way as the only way to living in victory.
So many of mankind try to live without obedience to God’s way. They prefer to live on “bread alone,” that is, going their own way. Others like the idea of God and Jesus Christ as savior but like to pick and choose what they will obey. They only live in obedience to God part way. In other words, we humans prefer to disobey or cheat.
Jesus said every word of God, not just some, is important to heed. We cannot pick and choose as if the Bible is a buffet where we only take what we want or like. The Bible fits together, each verse/paragraph/chapter/book connecting intimately with all the other verses/paragraphs/chapters/books. No one who takes what he likes and disregards the rest is able to live as God wants him to live. Instead, he lives as he pleases, without a solid foundation. Those who choose to ignore God all together have no foundation at all.
Luke 6:47-49
47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” NIV
